Our mission is to inspire future generations of adventurers to follow their outdoor dreams and encourage women to reclaim space in paddlesports—an arena where female participation has historically been underrepresented.
From 2013-2018, canoeing participation dropped by 14%, and the percentage of female canoeists fell by 6% (ACA Special Reports on Paddlesports, 2019). Through this expedition, we aim to inspire women to take on outdoor challenges, explore the outdoors, and push past traditional barriers in the paddling world.
As women existing in outdoor spaces, we have received all sorts of comments from people on trail, usually well-intentioned. From asking if we need help portaging our gear to physically trying to take gear out of our hands or off our backs, we've seen it all. Most commonly, we hear “is that a girl under there?” when passersby realize women can portage both a pack and a 75 lb Alumnacraft canoe at the same time. It is important to show young girls how to be confident and that women can be just as strong and capable as the men they encounter on trail. So we encourage all of you to portage your canoes with the confidence and strength of a girl.
