Our 1,200 mile route from Lake Superior to Hudson Bay, Canada is roughly the same distance as driving from Michigan to Disney World in Florida. We estimate this will take us about 85 days of paddling and portaging through some of the most remote places in North America.
We’ll start our expedition by taking on Grand Portage- an 8.5 mile long portage from Lake Superior to the Pigeon River that French Voyageurs would complete to transport their fur pelts to Lake Superior for trading. From there, we’ll spend approximately two weeks paddling the 250 mile Border Route through the Boundary Waters-an area threatened by the impacts of proposed mining by Twin Metals in the Superior National Forest.
Then, we’ll paddle various lakes and rivers until we get to Lake Winnipeg, the 11th largest lake in the world which has an average depth of roughly 40 feet- making it extremely hazardous for boaters due to the threat of severe waves and wind. We will be paddling in the early hours of morning to do our best to avoid this hazard. We’ve also built in additional wind days to account for the weather in this section.
After Lake Winnipeg, we’ll reach the Hayes River, and the last few days of our trip we’ll paddle through Polar Bear country. Then, we’ll arrive at the historic York Factory at Hudson Bay!
